On My Worst Day Ever (Exercise)

On my worst day ever,
In the worst year to date,
We buried my grandmother.
Hers was not the first death that year,
Nor was it the last.
It was in August,
The sixth, but the days bled together.
She died on the fourth,
A wedding anniversary,
Now a death.
Friends and family
And even those no longer related
Came to pay their respects.
Tears flowed,
Bodies shook,
The air hot and humid,
A sunny day, bright, brighter,
The brightest day of the year
With so much sadness.
It seems surreal.
But there we were,
On that hot August day,
On the worst day
Of the worst year.
2003.
